Strange goal by Pysyk gives Sabres OT victory

**SInce I watched the replay over..and over..and over again. If you look at it from the refs standpoint, he sees the puck in the air, and as it drops there are players all around the goalie, so he(the ref) assumes the puck hit the ice, not go in his pants. And as soon as Smith backed up into the net the Sabres pointed out that the puck was in the back of Smith ,pants which clearly crossed the line. There was no whistle to blow the play dead cause the refs assumed that the puck was still in play and hit the ice.

**I really think if Smith hadn't dove right away into the back of the net (why did he do that btw) that this goal wouldn't have counted but the 1st thing he did was go right into the net, what a dumb play.

**If this was already answered, I apologize; I thought once a puck was out of play the puck was dead. Sure you can see it, but it is not playable. If someone shoots the puck on the back of the net, it is dead, but you can still see it. Why doesn't the same rule apply?

**Glad to see buffalo win one, always liked this team even though there in the same conference. Hopefully within the next couple of years this team can get back to being the team that had me very aggravated when they played the flyers a few years ago.

**You know what else should not have counted? Hull's OT goal in '99 against the Sabres. But it did so get over it.

**To me, it appears that the Coyote player was the one who hit the puck over the line. Seems like the linesman thought so as well and as such decided that Rule 83.1 applied, which says, in part, that: "...If a player legally carries or passes the puck back into his own defending zone while a player of the opposing team is in such defending zone, the off-side shall be ignored and play permitted to continue."

**Phoenix should have won this game by sheer numbers. Buffalo had 4 guys out due to the flu, and were down 5 after Drew Stafford elbowed Ekman-Larrson in the 2nd period. Having one of the best (if not the best) goaltender in the world surely helps. But the Yotes were a single mistake/turnover from seeing themselves in a tie game. And that's what happened. Sure, Buffalo got lucky in OT but this isnt the only time luck has played a role in a sporting event. (ex. Eli Manning's miracle catch in BOTH of his final drives during BOTH superbowls) Merry Christmas, fans of the NHL.

**Merry Christmas to you as well. After all the Sabres have been through, it's nice to see them finally getting things together as it seems, as they've won 3 of their last 4. And yeah, in my opinion Ryan Miller is the best goalie in the world, even playing behind not the greatest defense ( I mean no offense ). For a team that's 30th in the NHL, Miller's stats are incredible ( especially his save % ). I think the Sabres could start winning a lot more, if only they could start to score more goals.

**I'm not a Sabres fan, not a Yotes fan. However, how is that a good goal? Was the puck playable? I don't think so. The play should have been frozen. Couldn't he otherwise just put the puck in his pants and hold it in there for 50 minutes after his team gets the lead?

**Nothing questionable on the Coyotes goal. The stick looked under the cross bar and the ref had no proof that it wasn`t over. If you can prove that the call is wrong, the call on the ice stands

**Hey, the Sabres have been on the wrong end of questionable goals for a while so they deserve to have one go their way. *Cough* '99 *Cough* Dallas *Cough* Wow, the air is dry in here.

**from the standpoint of the refs, the puck goes up and drops down, but as soon as the puck starts to drop from the air, there are several players around the net, so they can't see if it went into Smiths pants. So they have to assume that it hit the ice, cause thats what happens 99.% of the time when the puck goes in the air like that. So in that case they didn't blow the whistle, so its a good goal, no matter how awkward or weird it is.

**Okay, I will get laughed at here but HOW IS THAT A GOOD GOAL?!!! He was out of the crease, puck in his pants so unless you start hitting the goalie like a pinata waiting for the candy, the puck could no longer be played. Should it not have been b-l-o-w-n d-e-a-d? For instance. I have seen pucks get caught between a goalie's knee and his pads....stuck in equipment....play b--l-o-w-n d-e-a-d. so why not this. is there a rule its playable in someone's backside?

**Blowing the whistle at that point is totally on the refs. To me this is a clear goal because he brought the puck inside the net. U can see the puck physically in the net. This is similar to when a goalie saves the puck with his glove but he brings his glove inside the net for a goal.

**The whole play took about 2 seconds from the time the puck landed in his pants to when Smith was in the net. The ref was trying to establish where the puck actually was and if he had no intention to blow the play dead then it is a good goal.

**The "moderation" is a robot mod, and they just remove posts that they deem offensive. Last year you couldn't get away with having the name Crawford in your post, even when he was playing in the SCF. They have some really strange words black listed in there.

**Sabres want young, plus I don't think they want another goalie because they got Enroth and two potential star goalies in Hackett and Markov. Plus the way Miller has been playing his value has increased and Buffalo will be asking a 1st round pick for him.

**That looked a lot worse than it really was, the Phoenix player really embellished that one. Stafford is by no means a dirty player, I'm not sure what got under his skin on that one.... And finally, have you ever been hit in the face with a padded elbow? It's no different than the gloved punches that you see that go uncalled several times a game (I played and Officiated for years). He'll probably get 5 games for it, if only they started giving out games for embellishment, Hockey is starting to turn into soccer!!!!

**He started the game on defense until Stafford got ejected from the game. He looked good tonight. He also came out between the first and second period to play hockey with the kids that came up to about his knees. Nice gesture by him, that people watching TV didn't see, for the kids.

**MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL 2013. And To All A Good Night QUACK QUACK

Kreider hat trick lifts Rangers past Canucks, Tortorella

**I just clicked on over to see Cam Talbot's stats. I know he has only played 8 games, but he is 6-1, and is 1st in the league in save percentage and goals against average. This guy seems to be the real deal. I hope the Rangers don't make the mistake of trading him for a 'scorer'.

**Really doubt AV will get fired after this season. The team has not played bad once you take out that nine game road trip that had injuries involved at the beginning of the season. Plus I don't think all of the pieces are there that AV would like; I could see different players coming in, but not AV getting fired.

**Hey Roberto Luongo. Listen up loser. In the Stanley Cup final, you got mad at Tim Thomas for not staying in the paint. You said, "It's an easy save for me but if you are wandering out and aggressive like he does, that is going to happen." I don't think any save is easy for you. You can't stop anything. So if I were you, I would not be talking especially since you are an AHL goalie and Thomas won a stanley cup.

**In the SCF the Canucks scored 8 goals in 7 games yet due to Luongo they won 3 games, and the haters who gotta hate blame the goalie. It is getting stale.

**Yes and right after Luigi opened his big yap to criticize Thomas after game 5, the Canucks promptly got blown out in the two games they had a chance to win the Cup. I think the aggregate in those two games were 9-2 or something. He obviously couldn't back up his arrogance and he showed what he does when something big is really on the line. Just like the Olympics. He tried to give it away in the last minute but Sid and the boys wouldn't let him. He has a much higher opinion of himself than anybody else on the planet does or should have.

**There ought to be enough British Columbians by now who are not "all Canucks" (if they ever were) given the team's forty-two year lack of consistency. If Torts can't get them in gear, we should sign a referendum to bring the NHL to Victoria. Either move the Coyotes there, or resurrect the old Victoria Cougars.

**Luongo should be the back up at best he likes to die sometimes put price in net as the starter.

**I think A.V. has brought a fresh and calming, but tough when needed energy into the locker room for This Rangers squad. They seem to play with more of a confidence and a sense of ease. The new style seems to be gelling better every game and it is not like we got blasted in Boston like we did in the beginning of the season. That 9 game road trip is way in the rear view mirror and now we are seeing our team win 3,4 and 5 goal games. Everyone is contributing a little more each game, Kreider has a newfound confidence, Nasher always has a chance to score everytime he touches the puck, Zuccs is an incredible playmaker, Talbot is having an incredible start to his career with his amazing positional play and relaxing demeanor in net without being too aggressive in the crease. McDonaugh has been our most consistent forward and Hanky needs to get back into form a little better. I say give Cam 2 starts in a row and see how he handles that. Congrats on the hat trick Kreider. You definitely are my favorite player on this Rangers team. Always had faith in you even when Torts handled you wrong. Let's go Rangers!!

**The only benefit I've seen from switching coaches is that it has freed up more time for me because I'm not watching the Canucks anymore until the core has changed. We clearly aren't the force to be reckoned with that we were in 2011 and our window is gone. I'll take a peak at the team when the twins and Luongo are gone. Until then, it's a yo-yo team, win, lose, win, lose..

**Exactly my thoughts when I read that, 23 games last year, make a mistake...benched. Play mostly on the 4th line with players who have no offensive talent. If anything, he held him back last year and might have got past the Bruins if he had a whole year to improve. Still I think Boston would have beat us, just by being out coached. Torts with his boring defensive collapsing system. Making the forwards block shots instead of letting them cover the Bruins defense, whom scored most of the goals. A 10 year old kid could have coached the team better...good riddance to a coach long past his due date...congrats to Kreider, you deserve it all on your own, despite Torts.

**no suspension but the player and the coach get a big fine for fighting in the last 5 mins,i know its weird the coach gets fined too, that rule is there to stop losing coaches from sending a "message" at the end of games.even thou that fight was all bieksa's doing torts will get dinged too.

**Couldn't be more farther from the truth..Boyle is far from a fighter, in fact he is absolutely terrible at it and rarely gets into them. Besides the fact that it isn't his forte or style of game. But when challenged what are you supposed to do ? He tried to hold on, Ranger fans know he sucxs at it, we all wish he would take some boxing lessons and learn to use his size better by hitting and standing up for teammates..Bieska clearly has the advantage in that department, if anyone was taking advantage of it, it's on him.

**The canucks should be concerned. They are on the outside of the playoff picture right now since joining a much tougher division and have gone 1-4-3 against the teams from the former pacific that are now in the newly formatted pacific. I knew their numbers would take a hit now that they were playing against much better teams more regularly but those numbers keep up its likely they'll miss the playoffs.

**Canucks:Burrows - change the tape on your stick to white medical tape. You are playing as well as always. The stick isn't scoring. Garrison: Bottom hand down - puck goes up. Bottom hand up puck stays down. Put a ring of tape or epoxy around you stick handle where that hand should be. You can feel it without looking. Then we won't see shots 3 feet over the net.

**if this trend continues then yes a trade needs to happen and instead of prospects and draft picks they need to trade roster players. secondary scoring has been a huge huge problem for the nucks and they need to make a solid trade for a real goal scorer that can provide around 20 -30 goals for the team. booth isn't cutting it , higgins has slowed down tremendously over the years, burrows is having a tough time and santorelli won't provide goals frequently it appears.

**Vancouver one 1st line ttwo 3rd lines and a 4th line. They are doing their best with what management has given them. This is a once great team showing us what happens when you go back to being mediocre. Blame the management not the players or coach. BIG trade in the wind, surely?

**Oh, forgive my insolence and lack of a cognizant post when entering a well formed thought into a hockey comment board. The fact that you missed the blatant comedic value of his quip speaks volumes about the overly analytical nature of yourself, who I'm assuming, feels the need to dissect semantics only in a vain attempt of self-adoration. What's worse, is the way you go about voicing your petty remarks, as if your apparent abundance of intelligence somehow correlates to others lack thereof. Ironic when you tout yourself in such high regard, only to miss the point entirely...Don't be so pious and egotistical.

Flyers head off on trip with win against Jets

**I like how Giroux pulled a Messier and said they will make the playoffs. The team really rallied behind him, Not because they didn't want to get embarrassed, but because they already were. Everybody knew the Flyers are an excellent club, Its just that nobody (Besides Mason) Was playing to their strengths. Great to see him really motivate his team, not just through his words but his play aswell.

**Wow what's with this moderation, why did my post get deleted? Anyway, Jets need to rethink their defense. Both goals from giveaways. It could have been 3 if Couturer scored on his first breakaway.

**The flyers are my fav team besides my home team (VANCOUVER) it's great to see you guys pick it up. Almost over .500, keep it up boys. I want to see the Flyers in the playoffs this year!

**Anyone who thinks the Flyers make a mistake by buying out Bryz hasn't followed the Flyers close enough the past two seasons. Steve Mason has played out of his mind this year, he wasn't given up more than three goals since the Flyers traded for him last March. Without a question the Flyers should have 4-6 more victories this year, but you certainly can't blame the Flyers goaltending this time around. And even Ray Emery, put aside him fighting Holtby has played decent.

**Man I didn't get to watch the game but from these highlights it looks like Pavelec was on fire even if he did lose. Glad our Flyers won though!

**Entertaining game. Normally I would have to end my night with a Flyers game (due to the time zone difference most games are from 1 to 3/4 AM), but for once it was at a "normal" time. Although a night out with friends is awesome, this win made the night even better.

**One of the things I like about Mason is he didn't get cold after only facing two shots in the first period. He was reliable for the whole game.

**Just leave Pens.. Rangers lost. Isles lost. Caps are losing. Columbus will lose. Ok we can't get anything from Canes and Devils I just wish it won't be a 3 points game.

**love how bryzgalov gets all the recognition and applause for being good in one game and mason for bein good all year isnt

**Bryz faced 0 quality shots last night. It was the worst Nashville game I have ever seen. And he was shaky in several situations too.

**Believe me or not but I knew that Mason would be a better goalie than Bob.. Even after Bob won Vezina.. Ok he had great stretch in the shortened season while playing behind great Western team - because Jackets were a great Western team in the second half of last season. Now they aren't even Western lol

**Nice win but we have got to keep working in practice. Mez has GOT TO GO, what can we get for him? A 3rd round pick? Also Hartnell scored but he can not keep up on that line, I forget what his role is on this team at this point. Another 5 on 3 chance we didnt get but we got the 2 points.

**don't worry about mez i'm sure holmgreen is trying like hell to dump him unless snider thinks otherwise. But I don't think that even oilers are so desprete to want the guy. but maybe he will stay healthy and work on his speed and regain some distinct part of game he was playing once to deserve the contract he has now.

**I just don't get that Flyers team. How can you have such a bad season start and suddently start rolling this way? It can't only be the coaching change, especially since Lavy was quite a decent leader. In any case, nice win guys, happy to see Mason finally pullins his s together.

**Lavy's "abandon-the-goaltender" system lead to a lot of 2-on-1's the other way on us. That system works well when you have fast talent like Chicago or Pittsburgh; but not for the Flyers, which is full of two-way grinders. The team has been much better defensively since Berube has taken over. However, the focus on team defense has resulted in less scoring - which is partially behind Giroux's and Voracek's slow seasons.

**Only problem is if the Canes lose, the Devs jump 1 point ahead of us. I have a feeling the Devs will beat the Sabres tomorrow (but you never know) so I don't know who I want to win the Canes/Devs game. Got to love how 1 games throws so many things around in the Metro

**the main thing is the flyers won! The bruins beating the rangers was a bonus, and if the habs can beat the caps tonight as well, that would be awesome.

**nobody is, you guys are way too defensive. people are just saying Bryzgalov played a great game. But yeah, one interesting this is Mason so far has better numbers than Bryzgalov had in his best season, and he was considered elite at the time. and this is one case where you can't blame the good numbers on the defense.

**i didnt know the edmonton media is that big my bad. Out of all the candian teams i would think EDM or CAL are bottom for media hype.I mean, gretzky has been out for 15 years now

**I hope he's 10 times better. He certainly could be. I personally don't see the comparison at all. This coming from a guy who got a Ricci jersey the day after they drafted him.

**Like I said, I'm hoping for a lot more out of him. He's been stuck on the third line being used as a shutdown guy, but it's obvious that Berube has unleashed, not only Couts, but a lot of guys. I'd like to see 60 points out of him on a yearly basis combined with his defensive abilities. Ricci was always gritty and slammed a lot of his goals home. I see a lot more finesse to come as he continues to gain more confidence in his scoring abilities.

**The Jets are a good team, but just seem to be competitive enough to lose by 1 goal. Too bad they're in the West, they have very little chance of making the playoffs...

**Great to see that Couturier's starting to perk up again. As for the officiating, yes, there were bad calls on both ends, but of course that's nothing new in the league these days...

Bryzgalov shines in first start for Oilers

**Bryzgalov is an excellent goalie and it's great to see him back on the ice. If he has good rebound control that night, the other team has no chance. Can he win a cup, I don't think so. But he is very, very good.

**Some of the comments in this thread make me furious. PEOPLE FYI. BRYZ WAS BOUGHT OUT BECAUSE HE WAS BEING PAYED TWICE AS MUCH AS HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN MAKING. I would buy him out 100x again with his absurd contract and mediocre numbers. One good game, and all of a sudden the last 2 years of play disappear? He played up to his contract for 2 months in Philly. I love Bryz so much, but that's the undeniable truth people. Defense was horrible for him here, there's no denying that, but he still was only average at best. Now all that said, I would love to watch Bryz catch fire and carry the Oilers out of the basement. I wouldn't mind seeing him win another cup either! But even then, I would still 100% agree with buying him out.

**So...is this a good sign for Edmonton? You know, if I were MacT, I'd have Brygalov as the starter and LaBarbera or Bachman for the backup...drop Dubnyk.

**Haha it would be so funny if bryz were to stand tall through the entire season and end up getting the oilers to the playoffs and win the vezina, then flyers would have traded away both of the last two vezina winners.... i guess that would finally be the nail in the coffin for holmgren who shouldve been fired years ago....

**Hopefully Bryzz is the solution they've been looking for all this time. If he can play like this or even or even close to this, the Oilers have hope for the playoffs.

**Oh look only two NHL games last night and the NHL still will not feature the Oilers with a win on their home page. Apparently 3 old posts is still more important. Good job NHL.com

**They did the exact same thing with our 7-0 win vs Columbus. The only difference was that nhl.com didnt even post the 7-0 game on the sidebar or the homepage.

**What does NHL have against the Oilers!? Who couldn't be intrigued by the young talent, and everyone is waiting for them to make their way up in the standings. Good luck!

**He also played great for the Flyers in the first few games. He will trail off eventually...remember people, this is just one game. But I will say this, 33 saves isnt easy in the NHL so I will give him that.

**Yea the rest of the team was responsible for those bad angle goals and those squibbers between the pads. How about the one where Brzy DUCKED to get out of the way. I guess that was the teams fault as well.

**It's one game people. Lets talk about this again when we have a 20 game sample. Not trying to take anything away from Bryzgalov, only it's a little early to state what his long term effect on the team will be.

**oilers only won because they are lucky that our best goalie rinne is injured if rinne was playing oilers would not stand a chance dont think ur all that good just because we have our best player injured if rinne was in the goal i think it would of been about 2-0 or 3-0 for preds

**Of course Bryz was great in goal, but for me it was the case of putting four lines which individually can produce or at least establish som pressure on opponents. Arco and Jones in for Acton and Gadzic, for me, was the tiebreaker. I have just been waiting for that to happen. Bring the Blue Jackets on!

**Good to see Bryz back doing his thing! This guy can still win in this humangus beeg universe, and he showed it tonight. Hoping to see him do well.

**With ILIA the PROPHET tending NET, Oilers are different team. ILIA was the START UP Goalie on Russian National Team, he is inferior to no one. Great signing by MacT !

**This is way off topic but I'm waiting for the power rankings which is a much wider spectrum of topics. Does anyone think an NHL team ( keeping all it's players ) could beat one of the favourites in the Olympics ? If you do which NHL team & which country would they beat ?

**The Oilers need excellent goaltending just to have a chance at winning?? They also need depth at that position---- Its called being able to pull a MIKE KEENAN / Captain hook when neccassary!!! Having 2 good goalies is critical to winning.

**I ditto that! Bryz has NEVER proven himself. As far as I'm concerned he "threw" the last playoff series when he was with the Coyotes. Then when he pranced into Philly he showed the world just how fickle a goaltender he is. I hope the Oiler fans don't get their hopes up too much. These are the exact comments (hopes) Philly fans had when he got traded there.

Daniel Sedin scores 300th goal in Canucks win

**soooooo.... now that Craig Anderson is DEAD LAST in G.A.A and 3rd last in Sv% (of goalies that have played at least half of their teams games) can we soon agree that he isn't a starting goalie in this league anymore.

**it is time to bench Andy and trade Spezza, Michalek and Phillips too. Even Yachine is better than Spezza as a captain. I used enjoy watch the sens but not anymore. Too painful!.

**I remember hearing the same thing back in the day when the Sens first gave Alfredsson the Captaincy, and we know that story now. It's not all Spezza, it doesn't help that Michalek is not keeping up.

**Its time to bench Anderson for some time. Call up No1 in Bingo give Lehner No1.1 job and thats that. So sick and tired of hearing Andy is No.1 when he obviously is not. Oh on another note call upp hoffman as well. Yesterdays game was a disaster except for Zib and Mac

**What are they, 32-33 years old? Its possible that they both hit the 1000 point mark with Van. That would be a nice piece of hockey history.

**They turned 33 in September. I think Henrik has 819 points now and Daniel 782. Not bad for two guys some pathetic trolls love to call "sisters".

**I hear ya, I get crybaby crosby, and Cindy all the time still lol. Haters gonna hate.

**Ottawa actually played well this game, other then the 10 min in the second where everything fell apart.. but ottawa kept pushing and didn't stop, alot better then previous games where there is no heart. Luongo played great, made big saves look easy Also go Zbad, crappy goal but a goal none the less i think im going to like him and spezza on a line. and MacArthur with his 100th career goal, Daniel's 300th Great game to watch.. cheers

**Congratulations to Daniel! He's now 6th all time among Swedish goal scorers and will soon be 5th. Pretty decent guys ahead of him: 1. Sundin (564) 2. Alfie (430) 3. Markus Näslund (395) 4. Tomas Sandström (394) 5. Ulf Dahlén (301)

**Probably better to ease Anderson back into "form" and use Lehner as the more regular goalie for a while. Simply because Lehner is playing better right now, and it may take Anderson a while to get back to a high level of play.

**Why do you put Anderson in goal when you have a Lehner that won alot of games for Ottaw?. If they wanna have a chance of playoff i think they need to use Lhener as number 1.

**i think the press kind of got in maclean's head and he wanted to prove a point about anderson being the no. 1 goalie, and also part of it will be the fact that he wanted to help anderson build up confidence - sitting him and sticking in lehner more is only going to make him more self-conscious, potentially. otherwise though i totally agree, as a hockey team you go with who's hot

**Well obviously constantly shoving Anderson in goal to work his inconsistency out is only costing games, as well as the defense inconsistency, as much as I think Michalek has worked hard to fix his knees, he is definitely a liability on the top line.

**Like everyone else, i'm trying to understand why the Sens can't win regularly this year. Turnovers (giveaways) leaders : 2012-13 (48 games) Alfredsson 36 Gryba 32 2013-14 (26 games) Karlsson 41 ( 75 expected after 48 games) Spezza 28 ( 52) It's obvious that the defensive play style that made the Sens successful last year CAN'T work anymore. As good as they are, these 2 guys messed up the team identity. Also, Anderson...

**Amen... Call MacLean and tell him his play style is terrible, i am with you man. He has done an incredible job last year but this does not count anymore. Is it their play style or are the players just lazy?!?! i have no idea, the team is not fun to watch at the moment..

**ive enjoyed having tortorella as a coach as i think he's good for the team but he still doesn't understand you can't develop players if you give them NO ICE TIME Kassian has 5 goals this year let's put him on the fourth line Burrows has 1 oh lets put him on the first line um ok

**Here's the thing, Kassian is inconsistent. Torts isn't going to give him ice time for the sake of developing the kid, he has to earn every minute of it. As for Burrows, he's a proven top six forward and has done a lot of good things and has come close to putting pucks in net, but luck just isn't on his side at the moment.

**Wow, Paulrus, is it not obvious who deserves more starts? Anderson hasn't played like himself since the Nichuskin incident. I want Lehner Lehner Chicken Dinner!!

**Craig Anderson is probably the strangest goalie of all time. He has these long stretches (that sometimes last all season) where he is either brilliant or horrible. Just look at his all time season stats. Good season followed by poor. Probably not good news for Ottawa. I wonder if they should just ride Lehner instead of hoping that Anderson will find his form.

**Depends how fast they trade Anderson, because the more starts he struggles in, the less the Sens can get for him.

**Liked him when he was in Florida and thought he was a good pick up for Vancouver. Don't know what happened to his game, but I hope this is the start of a return to his scoring touch.

**Went to the tweetup for this game, I picked a santorelli card, still didn't win tickets, that's twice in a row at tweetups i get someone and don't win tickets

**I think what he is trying to say is that the canucks made it to their first SCF in the 1981-82 season, 11 years after entering the NHL in the 1970-71 season. While the Sharks, well...

**Yea man dont make us Rangers fans look bad cause most of us have class. Congrats on the nice win and Daniel's 300th goal. That was uncalled for dude. Show some respect to a great hockey player.
